It's tradition, no matter how you slice it!
The king cake originated as a cultural Mardi Gras tradition, thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. A King Cake is a cross between a coffee cake and a French pastry, often with rich fillings like cream cheese, pecan praline, and strawberry. A tiny plastic baby is placed inside each cake, symbolizing infant Jesus’ arrival on Epiphany/Kings’ Day on January 6th — the first day of Carnival season! If the baby’s in your slice, it’s your turn to buy the next cake. Learn more about the history of the king cake.
